In Book X, Pausanias recalls two statues offered by the people of Massalia to Athena and Apollo, in Marmarià and Delphi. In relation to this, Pausanias speaks of the origin of Massalia's polis and the progress of his eudaimonia. To evaluate the testimony, it is necessary to take into account the method of work of Pausanias. In addition to the literary sources, among which a particular role of confrontation and competition is up to Herodotus, it includes above all information received during his journey. This allows the re-evaluation of Pausania's testimony concerning Massalia and the chronology of his foundation as polis.

Abstract
In Book X, Pausanias recalls two statues offered by the people of Massalia to Athena and Apollo, in Marmarià and Delphi. In relation to this, Pausanias speaks of the origin of Massalia's polis and the progress of his eudaimonia. To evaluate the testimony, it is necessary to take into account the method of work of Pausanias. In addition to the literary sources, among which a particular role of confrontation and competition is up to Herodotus, it includes above all information received during his journey. This allows the re-evaluation of Pausania's testimony concerning Massalia and the chronology of his foundation as polis.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
