Abstract

A short survey on I Puritani’s vocal profile, after Bellini’s correspondence and critiques of the première, introduces a review of an historical recording of the opera (1970), preserved thanks to the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino archive. The performance – conducted by Riccardo Muti and starring Cristina Deutekom, Nicolai Gedda and Sesto Bruscantini – helps to retrace an history of interpretation of Bellini’s masterpiece, with regard to traditional cuts and the accuracy of belcanto, which Muti himself will reconsider ten years later for the EMI studio recording.
