The paper is based on the discovery of one of the famous letters sent in the last years of his life by Francesco Albani to his pupil and friend Girolamo Bonini, letters which had already been owned by Malvasia and which were unfortunately dispersed between the 18th and 19th centuries. An analysis of the letter highlights the leading role that the painter claimed for himself, even after many years, as the protagonist of that fundamental pictorial season of Bolognese and Emilian painters in early 17th-century Rome. In particular, Albani recalls his own primary role in the execution of one of Annibale's most important works in Rome, the decoration of the Herrera Chapel in San Giacomo degli Spagnoli, whose frescoes, detached in the 19th century, are now in Madrid and Barcelona.
