This article focuses on the Italian translations of Balkanska carica, a verse drama by Nicholas I Prince of Montenegro which was very successful in the Serbo-Croatian area at the time of its publication. The work, to a large extent expression of the political ideas of the sovereign, was translated and published more than once in Italy. These translations (two of which were unabridged, one in prose and one in verse), adaptations, and various editions constitute a noteworthy case-study of the exchanges among the literary field, translation practices, and the discourse of politics.
