This article analyzes how the myth and thaumásia of the classical Greek world were perceived by a Greek of Asia Minor during the age of the Antonines. Pausanias, in his searching for signs of Greek greatness of the archaic, classical and proto-Hellenistic ages, is strongly influenced by his travel experiences in mainland Greece, and by the discussions with interlocutors he met during his journey.
