The article aims to demonstrate the role played by the main aristocratic families of the Neapolitan Kingdom in a period of great complexity. In particular, the analysis develops around three key moments: the lynching of the Eletto del Popolo Starace in 1585, the transition from the reign of Philip II to that of Philip III and the progressive crisis of the Duke of Lerma’s power. The events of 1620 and the tormented end of the government of the third Duke of Osuna constitute the ideal conclusion of a very troubled historical phase.
