This paper focuses on the description of the final battle in Sallust’s Bellum Catilinae (§ 56- 61) in order to find the typical narrative techniques of the ekphrasis; in this way, it will be pos sible to explain the vividness of this description, and to reflect on the relationship between the ancient historiography and the rhetoric of the preliminary exercises (progymnasmata).
