Fermor's travelogue is either about people and socio-historical figures, or about communities, landscapes, poetry and myth. He seeks to portray and discuss people from the past, their habits and behaviours, in a way that includes rather than excludes them. Both this inclusiveness and the combination of past and present require direct attention to questions of cultural memory and how it is linked to human society. The author describes and draws the main features of the historical imagination, almost archetypes, that remain today. True to the aim of Fermor's work, the aim of this paper is to follow Fermor's journey in order to reconstruct the overall picture of a country that has always contributed, in the past as well as in the present, to bringing together people of different cultures and habits, thus creating a favourable climate for the development of intercultural relations.
