Contemporary democracies are hybrid. Contemporary human identity is hybridized to the non-human. Hybridization has a fuzzy logic that determines paradoxical identity evolutions. Sociology does not understand this morphogenesis, it lacks certain reference points and is looking for a paradigm that reclassifies the role of the human being and his possible identity evolutions that transcend human limits and horizons of meaning. The ambivalence between freedom and constraint, between individual and society, between agency and structure has always been the fundamental problem of sociology. The classic positions of individualism and methodological collectivism have proposed unsatisfactory solutions, considering now the structure as an epiphenomenon of acting, now agency as a derivative of the structure. It becomes necessary to rethink the keywords of the discipline, but also their interconnection logic: no longer dialectical, nor binary, but nuanced and relational. Taking into consideration authoritative exponents of contemporary sociology, in this essay we investigate the possible evolutions of identities that are determining the transition from a society of individuals to a post-society of hybrid individuals. Finally, it is necessary to understand how concrete this change is, or how much it is the product of a storytelling, determined by the return of scientist ideology.
