The article aims to investigate the repressive activities organised by the Viceroy Count of Oñate in the Kingdom of Naples after the end of the 1647-48 revolt. As well as processing, condemning or forcing into exile many rebel leaders and members of the popular class, Oñate persistently accused some Neapolitan aristocrats of plotting against Spanish power and in favour of the French monarchy both before and during the revolt. The Viceroy's intention was not only to punish the Spanish king's subjects who had been guilty of the most serious crime, disloyalty to their sovereign, but also to prevent them from plotting new revolts and conspiracies in the future. In spite of a long and heartfelt defence, the accused were unable to avoid a clear reduction in their power and influence.

Abstract
In spite of a long and heartfelt defence, the accused were unable to avoid a clear reduction in their power and influence.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
