In this paper, we will discuss some linguistic evidence that seems to point to an occasional alternation between /l/ and /r/ in Lycian. Particularly, we will focus on the correspondence between the Lycian toponym Pinale and its Greek equivalent Πίναρα, which shows an interchange between /l/ in Lycian and /r/ in Greek. Because such an interchange is lacking elsewhere, different explanations will be suggested and evaluated, also taking into account other languages of Anatolia and possible language contact scenarios.

Abstract

In this paper, we will discuss some linguistic evidence that seems to point to an occasional alternation between /l/ and /r/ in Lycian. Particularly, we will focus on the correspondence between the Lycian toponym Pinale and its Greek equivalent Πίναρα, which shows an interchange between /l/ in Lycian and /r/ in Greek. Because such an interchange is lacking elsewhere, different explanations will be suggested and evaluated, also taking into account other languages of Anatolia and possible language contact scenarios.
