After having raised some questions about the compatibility of the theology of the De coelo with that of the Metaphysics and the internal consistency of each of the two theologies, I will defend the thesis that the two theologies can be best understood in their mutual connection. The Unmoved Mover – the god of Metaphysics 12 – should be conceived as the intellect of the Heaven – the god of the De coelo. I will also discuss the religious imaginary that Aristotle uses in ‘building’ his own god: the Unmoved Mover, while having an impressing consistency from the theoretical point of view, from the point of view of history or religion will result as an artificial conflation, in the milieu of the Old Academy, of many religious figures, among which are prominent Uranus, Hades and Dionysus.

Abstract
After having raised some questions about the compatibility of the theology of the De coelo with that of the Metaphysics and the internal consistency of each of the two theologies, I will defend the thesis that the two theologies can be best understood in their mutual connection. The Unmoved Mover – the god of Metaphysics 12 – should be conceived as the intellect of the Heaven – the god of the De coelo. I will also discuss the religious imaginary that Aristotle uses in ‘building’ his own god: the Unmoved Mover, while having an impressing consistency from the theoretical point of view, from the point of view of history or religion will result as an artificial conflation, in the milieu of the Old Academy, of many religious figures, among which are prominent Uranus, Hades and Dionysus.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
