The essay traces the steps that between the 19th and 20th centuries led first to a reform of scientific medicine, then to a rethinking of it. The accentua- tion of the dichotomy between experimental and clinical medicine led doctors and philosophers to an in-depth reflection on the role of the subject in medicine, which found a significant theoretical framework in the medical anthropology of Weizsäcker, in the thought of Gadamer and Jonas. This introduction of the sub- ject is the premise for the recovery of a medical praxis that, as in recent narrative medicine, values the doctor-patient relationship and concentrates its attention as much on taking care as on curing.
