Hospitals is a fundamental theme in the history of the Order of Malta as it has been frequent in the relationship with the social and economic conditions of many cities. Exemplary is the story of Sulmona where in 1320 the Confraternita dei laici della Penitenza founded the church and hospital of the B.M. Vergine dell’Annunziata and entrusted it to the Hospitallers of Capua, connecting it to the network of hospitals of the Annunziata that the Angevins created throughout the Kingdom of Naples.
