Grand challenges evoke impactful research on problems that truly matter and affect humankind. Unsurprisingly, scholars often use the term to amplify the interest and underlying motivation of their articles or to emphasize their potential impact on tackling grand challenges. However, as a result, the literature that can be associated with grand challenges grew incoherently, and we still lack a thorough understanding of what drives creativity and innovation to tackle grand challenges from a theoretical perspective and what actionable strategies should be implemented. This article presents a narrative review of key studies on the topic, it discusses different streams of research and proposes a set of research questions aimed to nurture the discussion on the topic and contribute to the definition of a call for papers for a ‘Creativity and Innovation Management’ journal special issue.
