D.H. Lawrence's discovery of Giovanni Verga was an important moment in his writing career. His translations of Verga were an opportunity for him to explore the human candour that lay beneath the surface of Sicilian sophistication and appeared at the very moment in which the Sicilian writer was enjoying a revival after years of critical neglect. Lawrence's translation of "Mastro-Don Gesualdo" make no attempt at a fluent translation of Vergas's work in the target language but, rather, adopt the approach of what Venuti has called foreignization, highlighting cultural differences and adhering closely to Verga's elliptic style to create an effect of estrangement similar to that experienced by his original native readers. Through a series of translation analyses the article reveals Lawrence's sensitivity to the spirit of Verga's novel as well as the influence of Verga on the development of Lawrence's own style.

Abstract
