In this article we reflect on the relationship between mind, brain and environment in the historical perspective of more than fifty years of debate on the foundations of cognitive science. In this debate we carve out a reformist agenda that aims to incorporate some important ideas from the literature on 4E cognition into the computational-representational framework. However, reformism is a difficult task; and in this article we focus on two open problems in the reformist agenda. The first concerns the replacement of the symbolic notion of mental representation with the idea of a continuum of representational genera; the second concerns the possibility to put together mechanistic-computational explanations and dynamicist explanations.

Abstract
In this article we reflect on the relationship between mind, brain and environment in the historical perspective of more than fifty years of debate on the foundations of cognitive science. In this debate we carve out a reformist agenda that aims to incorporate some important ideas from the literature on 4E cognition into the computational-representational framework. However, reformism is a difficult task; and in this article we focus on two open problems in the reformist agenda. The first concerns the replacement of the symbolic notion of mental representation with the idea of a continuum of representational genera; the second concerns the possibility to put together mechanistic-computational explanations and dynamicist explanations.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
