Abstract
The study aims at defining a conceivable methodologic and enforceable framework to understand, safeguard and requalify the ‘landscapes of modernity’ that the European Landscape Convention identifies as proper spaces for the “natural, rural, urban and peri-urban” community contemplating “both landscapes that can be considered exceptional or ordinary, and degraded landscapes”. As the result of the rapid economic and social growth during the past century, the historic building and, in particular, the architectural and urban heritage of the twentieth century, in the current state of the studies, have been particularly sensitive compared to the transformations generated by speculative pressures that still affect the quality of built environment. The purpose is to outline the safeguard of the heritage as a dynamic process identifying areas and test fields to formulate and submit new safeguard orientations aimed at reaching the perfect balance between economic and social issues, and environmental preservation and requalification. The recognition and indexing of the existing assets position themselves as preliminary and essential operations to broaden the concept of cultural heritage and organize and promote initiatives aimed at raising awareness of the civil society and the public and private authorities, at the education and training of experts in the field of safeguard, promotion and management of the territory and directed to the identification and evaluation of the identity values of the “landscapes” supported by the European Landscape Convention.
