The Ethiopian Community in Jerusalem and Italy between the End of the Ottoman Rule and the British Mandate This essay – based on the documentation of the Consulate of Italy in Jerusalem – examines the relations of Italy with the Ethiopian community of the monastery of Deir el-Sultan, located at the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. The story of Deir el-Sultan represents one of the threads of the wider plot represented by the Italo-Franco-British rivalry for the control of Ethiopia. At the same time, the study illustrates the internal dynamics of the Ethiopian community in Jerusalem and its attempts to consciously exploit the rivalry between the European powers to benefit from it in the various issues relating to the status quo in Jerusalem.
