The article offers a re-examination of the sources concerning the figure of Melanthius of Athens. He was an elegiac poet close to Cimon in the 70s - 60s of the 5th century BC and a tragedian mocked by comic poets in the last quarter of the same century. Particular attention is paid to the nature of his connection with Morsimus and to the related question of the authorship of a tragedy, the Medea.
