The paper deals with the participation of Italian troops in the operation “Barbarossa” during WW2, alongside the Wehrmacht. The reasons which led Mussolini to get into the war against the Soviet Union have been examined, as well the consequences of the Russian campaign on the Italian domestic politics. The study is based on archival sources, in particular on the documents of the Russian State Archive of Socio-Political History (RGASPI), Central Archive of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation (TsA FSB RF), Archives of the Historical Office Branch of the Army General Staff (AUSSME), and on Russian, Anglo-Saxon and Italian historiographies.

Abstract
