By adopting a theoretical perspective, this paper examines the issue of masculinity in reference to Francesco Piccolo’s hybrid novel L’animale che mi porto dentro (2018). Piccolo’s novel here serves as a case study to demonstrate how masculinity cannot be examined without considering it as a practice. Through the analysis of both selected textual excerpts and paratextual elements of Piccolo’s novel, the main aim of this contribution is to show that it is impossible to theorise masculinity without referring to a model of representation that serves not to validate it as a paradigm, but to deconstruct it as such.
