The hospital of Ss. Annunziata in Sulmona was founded on 10 March 1320 by the Confraternity of the laymen of Penitence. On 21 January 1321 it passed under the jurisdiction of the Order of Jerusalem of the Priory of Capua. The birth of the complex is part of a common project for the management of the hospital structure in the Angevin kingdom. The hospital had a profound effect on the urban development of the city; becoming the most important architectural and social intervention in the city.
