Abstract

In recent decades, the concept of sustainable development defined criteria and principles that significantly influence the disciplines of design, requiring new and responsible approaches, especially in the use and consumption of available resources. The design of existing buildings represents the area of intervention that includes the most sustainable choices because, compared to the design of new buildings, it allows to curb further land consumption, to use resources more responsibly and to ‘put into practice’ the resilience capacities of the territories. Building and environmental reuse, also understood as design oriented towards sustainability, leads to a reconsideration of the values of the built environment. Pre-existing buildings characterized by low or no cultural value represent part of the resilience characteristics of places because they can provide a contribution to the regeneration processes by acquiring use value. This paper presents the work carried out for the third-party agreement stipulated between the municipality of Scontrone (Aq) and the Department of Architecture of the G. D’Annunzio University. The experience conducted focuses on the recovery and reuse strategies of a school and a hostel in a state of abandonment to trigger a process of sustainable development through service functions (reception and cycle tourism) for slow tourism.
