Pietro Bembo e l’accentazione: una sfida tecnologi- ca per l’industria tipografica rinascimentale

Riassunto · L’autore ripercorre tutta la carriera di Bembo nel suo costante rapporto con l’industria tipografica, mettendo a fuoco in particolare l’accentazione da lui introdotta nella stampa di opere in volgare. Il suo progetto fu quello di applicare al volgare l’accentazione del greco classico, fondata sull’impiego di accenti acuti nel corpo di parola e nell’ultima sillaba se seguita da un segno di punteggiatura, e gli accenti gravi in fine di parola seguita immediatamente da un’altra parola. A Technological Challenge for the Renaissance Printing Industry · The author retraces the entire career of Pietro Bembo in his constant engagement with the printing industry, focusing in particular on the system of accentuation he introduced in the publication of vernacular works. His project was to apply to the vernacular the accentual system of classical Greek, which prescribed the use of acute accents within the body of the word and on the final syllable if followed by a punctuation mark, and of grave accents at the end of a word immediately followed by another word. Over the years, Bembo strove to implement his system of accentuation, often reaching compromises when he realized that the technology of his time and the habits of typesetters were not yet prepared for his “revolution”.
