This study examines the transformative impact of fibre-optic networks on information systems within community-based industrial district firms, highlighting their contribution to sustainable development. Conceptualised as a highly efficient and novel instrument for industrial communication, the fibre-optic infrastructure has the potential to significantly amplify inter-firm data exchange, coordination, and collaborative processes. The research employs an in-depth case study of an Italian industrial district to illustrate how the adoption of fibre-optic networks enables firms to modernise their information systems and overcome structural communication constraints typical of district-based production models. The findings demonstrate that advanced digital connectivity tends to improve internal operational efficiency at the firm level and promote collective information sharing, thereby cultivating a more resilient, integrated, and sustainable industrial information ecosystem. Furthermore, the study highlights the strategic role of contemporary communication infrastructure in supporting long-term industrial competitiveness, reducing transaction costs, and promoting both economic and environmental sustainability. The present study makes a contribution to the extant literature on digital infrastructure and industrial organisation by demonstrating the potential of fibre-optic networks to facilitate sustainable development in territorially embedded production systems.
