The historical and artistic heritage of the provinces of Chieti and Pescara is characterized by a remarkable diversity of architectural styles and preserved cultural artefacts, spanning from medieval to contemporary art. The church of Santa Maria in Piano, situated in the hills of Abruzzo region, represents one of the most intriguing examples of medieval architectural abruzzese heritage. Its distinctive location at the southern entrance to Loreto Aprutino, beyond the historic centre, serves as a striking visual representation of the town. The church is regarded as one of the most noteworthy religious edifices in the territory, distinguished by its historical evolution, its ostensibly straightforward architectural composition, which is characteristic of Abruzzo, and its intricate stratifications. The decision to restore this architectural asset and its renowned decorative apparatus presented a valuable opportunity to reinforce the community's connection with its history, culture, and spirituality. The active involvement of the Loreto community was pivotal in fostering constructive engagement with the local administration which was able to listen to and interpret the needs of the citizens by carrying out a conscious project. Through a well-structured initiative, the restoration of S. Maria in Piano is intended to be a powerful social tool, capable of fostering civic engagement and underscoring the intrinsic link between architectural heritage and social fabric of a community.
