"Documenting old Abruzzese" is the title of an EU funded research project (Marie Curie Actions, FP7-PEOPLE-IEF-2008). Its purpose is to outline the linguistic profile of old Abruzzese, an upper southern Italian dialect spoken in Abruzzo, a central region of Italy, through the recovery and examination of manuscripts and prints of non-literary texts (letters, chronicles, statutes, etc.). Thus the goal of this project was twofold: A) to establish, document and edit a corpus of writings in old Abruzzese, and/or regional Italian spoken in Abruzzo, before the 1st half of the XX century; B) to set the ground and start a description of the grammar of this dialect. This speech focussed on: a) the documents retrieving results; b) the problems related to their inventorization (especially to copyright and Italian law), in which information about writers, linguistic area, typology, contents and purposes and salient linguistic features will be given; c) an ongoing web application, developed to manage the online database of retrieved documents, digitized in pdf/jpeg and text format. An automatic translation service will let accounted web-users start their search in Italian. Corresponding synonyms of each translated word will be fuzzy- searched, by exploiting principles of clustering in order to suit Abruzzese writings’ high variability in space and time. Supervised artificial neural networks methods will be eventually implemented to let the online system learn from skilled users’ proficiency.
