The aim of this contribution is to explore how the role and social function of Italian universities have changed over the course of the 20th century, a period of significant upheaval. It is important to note that these reflections, which are typically associated with the field of sociology, also hold significant educational value. A rigorous historiographical analysis – when situated alongside evolving legislation and shifting cultural ideologies of education, training, and knowledge – reveals the profound redefinition and evolution of universities and higher education in Italy. The study also allows for the identification of the origins of what is now termed as the Third Mission of universities, which is currently regarded as one of the strategic and crucial missions of national universities.
