The introduction of BIM (Building Information Modeling) in the management of existing architectural heritage (Historical BIM) opens up significant opportunities for research and reflection. In particular, its application to industrial archaeology sites and buildings represents a valuable opportunity to disseminate knowledge regarding their location, physical characteristics, conservation status, and to create a currently unavailable, sharable digital documentation able to support future conservation and valorization plans. The scope of interest ranges from the recovery of these structures and their contents as material and cultural assets that have shaped cities since the first industrial revolution, to the definition of new functions aimed at addressing their frequent state of abandonment. This study builds on these premises to propose a BIM-oriented approach aimed at creating a digital twin of such heritage, capable of collecting all available information for each site or building and making it accessible in open source mode through a web-based platform, thus facilitating understanding and supporting reuse strategies. Tested on a cluster of sites located in the Province of Milan, the approach proved effective both scientifically and technically, and highlighted the potential of integrating historical, cultural, technical, and construction-related data within a single virtual environment, continuously updatable by stakeholders involved in reuse and regeneration.
