The mandible is a commonly fractured bone in the head due to its prominent position in the face, and most of these fractures are obvious on clinical examination. Clinical findings include facial distortion, malocclusion of the teeth or abnormal mobility of parts of the mandible or teeth. Mandibular fractures can occur at any of its sites: condyle, body, angle, symphysis, ramus, coronoid process. The pathogenesis, clinical, radiological and surgical findings are reported and discussed. The Authors describe their experience in 16 patients affected with traumatic mandibular fractures treated surgically with 2.0-mm titanium plates during the last three years. The efficacy and advantages of plate osteosynthesis as a method of treatment of mandibular fractures are discussed.
