The travel and tourism sector is one major contributor to the environmental impacts of consumption and production systems worldwide. A recent critical review pointed out some weaknesses of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in the travel and tourism industry. To start overcoming these obstacles, a tourist product is defined in this paper bearing in mind the life cycle perspective. A first attempt to identify specific tourist products and their categories is also made in this work in order to delimit the scope of tourism LCA, and to create a strong conceptual basis for a further definition of detailed product categories for some forms of environmental labels and declarations. Further research developments are advocated to outline product-specific guidelines (i.e. product category rules) enabling to render LCA studies in this sector comparable and robust.

Abstract
The travel and tourism sector is one major contributor to the environmental impacts of consumption and production systems worldwide. A recent critical review pointed out some weaknesses of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in the travel and tourism industry. To start overcoming these obstacles, a tourist product is defined in this paper bearing in mind the life cycle perspective. A first attempt to identify specific tourist products and their categories is also made in this work in order to delimit the scope of tourism LCA, and to create a strong conceptual basis for a further definition of detailed product categories for some forms of environmental labels and declarations. Further research developments are advocated to outline product-specific guidelines (i.e. product category rules) enabling to render LCA studies in this sector comparable and robust.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
