The aim of this study is to monitor the effect of the occupational stress induced by temporary working activities on anxiety and immune response in subjects living in the area of Pescara and Chieti, towns of the region of Abruzzo (Central Italy). Men and women with stable employment (control groups) or temporary activities as professors, teachers, sanitary assistants, school or university employees as well as blue collar workers were investigated over a period of two years. All the recruited subjects filled up questionnaires, including a modified Italian version of the test of occupational stress of Karasek and of the state-trate anxiety inventory (STAI I and II). The immune response of all the recruited subjects were analyzed by determining the salivary IgA, an immune index of stress. Moreover, blood NK cell cytotoxic activity (correlated with depression and life style) and blood NK lymphocytes were determined in 200 subjects. Preliminary data show lower values of blood cytototoxic activity and higher score of STAI I and occupational stress in 12 men working in a library of the University. A significant negative correlation between STAI I and STAI II with blood cytotoxic activity was also demontrated. The results of this investigation evidence the types of temporary working activities which may affect the health status. This will be useful both for improving the sanitary monitoring and the management of working activities.
