The paper examines the system of characters in Giorgio Manganelli’s Centuria, paying particular attention to non-anthropomorphic figures. The classification of entities, ghosts, unusual objects, absences, dinosaurs, mythical animals and other imaginary creatures – each one investigated according to the function of estrangement and deconstruction of narrative models performed in the text – reveals how Manganelli’s ceremonies of nothingness and non-existence conceal a new, serial and antimimetic conception of narrative.

Abstract

The paper examines the system of characters in Giorgio Manganelli’s Centuria, paying particular attention to non-anthropomorphic figures. The classification of entities, ghosts, unusual objects, absences, dinosaurs, mythical animals and other imaginary creatures – each one investigated according to the function of estrangement and deconstruction of narrative models performed in the text – reveals how Manganelli’s ceremonies of nothingness and non-existence conceal a new, serial and antimimetic conception of narrative.
