The Abruzzo Region is largely affected by landslide phenomena, widespread from the mountain to the coastal areas. It is located in the central eastern part of the Italian peninsula and it is framed in a complex geological and geomorphological context. In detail, the geomorphological evolution of the region began with the formation of the Apennine thrust belt, at least from the Miocene in the chain area and from the late Early Pleistocene in the piedmont area, and it is closely connected to the combination of endogenous (morphotectonics) and exogenous processes (slope, fluvial, karst and glacial processes). The region is characterized by active geomorphological processes, mostly due to the drainage network evolution and to slope gravity processes. Detailed geomorphological studies on landslides have been performed in the Abruzzo area since the beginning of 19th century. In this work we present the results of integrated investigations, carried out in the recent years in order to analyze different types of landslides according to their structural and geomorphological features. Four case studies outline the main different types of landslides affecting the chain, the piedmont and the coastal sector of the Abruzzo area, focusing on the main predisposing and/or triggering factors.
