At the Faculty of Architecture of the University “G. d’Annunzio”, during the academic year 2002-2003, professor Laura Marcucci was the supervisor of the thesis of Rita Orlando entitled Marcello Piacentini. Regional Votive Temple in Chieti Scalo. Starting from that circumstance, Raffaele Giannantonio and Federico Bulfone Gransinigh wrote the present essay which deals with two works designed by Marcello Piacentini for Abruzzo. In the first part, Federico Bulfone Gransinigh analyses the project for the Regional Votive Temple of Chieti in which Marcello Piacentini, starting from 1949, resumes the scheme of the centric plan, constantly ignored in the churches built in the first post-war period. The work was not realised, preventing the creation of a unitary space that would have anticipated the indications of the Second Vatican Council. In the second part, Raffaele Giannantonio studies the church of the Holy Spirit designed by Piacentini from 1953 for Pescara. The church was conceived in continuity with the tradition of hall churches with chapels, finding inspiration in the façade from the characteristic experiences of medieval Abruzzo architecture, first of all S. Maria di Collemaggio in L’Aquila.
