Dietary Fiber comprises a group of compounds from different sources that share the ability to produce an array of beneficial effects on human health. A proper DF intake has a positive impact on gastrointestinal health, by promoting a healthy microbiota and enhancing a general well-being of people. Evidence also suggest a role in preventing several chronic and non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as cardiovascular diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes which are often long-lasting and caused by multiple factors. However, nowadays dietary fiber consumption remains below the recommended doses in most countries worldwide. In this review we summarize the main physiological effects of dietary fiber and the health outcomes reported in previous studies, with a specific focus on cereal bran. Although often regarded as a waste product, bran contains a significant amount of insoluble dietary fiber, making it a valuable source of health benefits. The intake of dietary fiber could be increased through fiber supplements and fortified foods, discussed in this review as relevant sustainable strategies also for cereal bran, with the simultaneous aim of promoting waste valorisation.

Abstract
The intake of dietary fiber could be increased through fiber supplements and fortified foods, discussed in this review as relevant sustainable strategies also for cereal bran, with the simultaneous aim of promoting waste valorisation.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
